Governed access for software that acts on financial data
An agent reading financial data needs more than an endpoint. It needs a scope it cannot exceed and a record of everything it read.
The problem
The interesting problem in financial AI is not retrieval. It is governance. An assistant that can answer questions about someone’s finances is reading data that belongs to a person, was shared under a specific consent, and will be used to justify something later.
That puts three requirements on the access layer, and none of them are satisfied by an API key. The first is scope: the agent should be able to reach exactly the resources it was granted and nothing adjacent. The second is provenance: every figure the agent used should be traceable to the connection and moment it came from, because “the model said so” is not an answer to a complaint. The third is a record: which agent read what, on whose behalf, under which consent, and when.
Building that per provider, across providers that disagree about identifiers and consent models, is how a governance layer ends up existing in three incompatible versions inside one company.
What VEREA does
Financial data reached through one interface, with permissions, scope, provenance, an audit trail and tenant isolation around every read.
- One interface across banking, and later investment and pension connections, so an agent integrates a capability rather than a set of vendors.
- Identity and permissions, binding every read to a customer, a connection and a consent that authorises it.
- Explicit scope, so an agent is granted the resources it needs and cannot reach past them.
- Provenance on material fields, so any figure an agent used can be traced to a provider, institution, connection and timestamp.
- An audit trail of reads, and freshness reporting, so an answer can be dated as well as sourced.
- Tenant isolation between customers of the platform.
What stays with you
VEREA is infrastructure. The parts of the problem that are your product, your policy or your regulatory responsibility remain yours.
- The model, the prompts, the reasoning and every action the agent takes. VEREA governs access to data, not behaviour.
- What you disclose to your end users about automated processing, and the legal basis for it.
- Your own retention and logging once data has left the interface.
